External Lighting

External Lighting

External areas can include open walkways, exterior stairwells, bridges, car parks and garage areas. The lighting should inspire feelings of safety and security for residents and helps discourage criminal behaviour. It is important that lighting in external and perimeter applications is robust and requires little in the way of maintenance.

CIBSE: SLL Lighting Guide 9 – Lighting for communal residential buildings 2013 recommends 10 lux for pathways and car parks.

SmartScan

External luminaires must have some form of lighting control to ensure they’re not wasting energy during the hours of daylight. Some can be simply controlled by photocell. However, a more sophisticated lighting management system such as SmartScan Radar or SmartScan External offers additional benefits:

  • Presence detection (either PIR or SmartScan Radar) can be used to ensure lighting is not left on for hours when spaces are unoccupied, increasing energy savings.
  • Web based fault reporting and diagnosis assists in maintaining the provision of lighting for residents and visitors.
  • Web based time control for more refined, user-friendly control.
