GVB Transport Depot

Gera, Germany

GVB is a municipal transport company in the German city of Gera, Thuringia. The organisation sought to maximise lighting efficiency and savings by upgrading the 30-year-old hall lighting in its depot.

GVB opted for state-of-the-art LED luminaires and the SmartScan lighting management system from Thorlux, working with Thorlux's German subsidiary SchahlLED Lighting. SchahlLED Lighting removed the old T8 luminaires from the two 120-metre-long depot halls (an area of almost 8,000 square metres) and the adjacent workshop. The old lights were replaced on a 1:1 basis with 467 standard and emergency Thorlux luminaires. Products used included Thoroproof linear and the Firefly emergency luminaire.

All luminaires are networked via the wireless SmartScan lighting management system. The built-in SmartScan sensors respond to movement, be it staff, buses, or trams; as a result, no energy is wasted lighting empty halls.

All luminaire operating and performance data is tracked via the SmartScan lighting management system. The emergency lights also automatically generate standard-compliant test reports, stored online and available for download by authorised users. Time-consuming monthly on-site emergency lighting checks are no longer necessary.

As a result of the new lighting system, GVB has reduced its lighting energy consumption by an impressive 90%.
