Arts Tower, University of Sheffield

Sheffield, United Kingdom

The Arts Tower is part of the University of Sheffield. Opened in 1965, this teaching facility is home to the School of Architecture and Landscape, as well as several professional services departments.

To improve accessibility to the tower, the main external entrance ramp has been renovated and fitted with Thorlux Brink illuminated handrails.

Brink is an entirely bespoke product line, so the Arts Tower’s railings were custom-designed and manufactured specifically for this project. The brushed stainless-steel rails used feature elegant squared and linear profiles and end pieces, guiding users up or down the switchback ramp.

Evenly spaced small luminaire modules, built into the underside of the rails, are controlled by the Thorlux SmartScan system, with a sensor installed in front of the Porter’s Office. SmartScan controls ensure the luminaires only activate when ambient light levels are low and the ramp is in use. This maximises energy efficiency while providing safe passage for all users. The vandal and corrosion-resistant luminaires are rated to IP66 and IK10.

Thorlux collaborated with the main contractor and their balustrade provider to provide a bespoke integrated solution, resulting in a fully compliant and architecturally pleasing scheme. Standards considered and adhered to in the design and installation include BS 8300-2:2018 (Design of Accessible and Inclusive Built Environment), Approved Document M (Access To and Use of Buildings), BS EN 1991 (Actions on Structures), and BS 6180 (Barriers In and About Buildings). Furthermore, the handrail lighting was commissioned by Thorlux engineers to guarantee optimum performance.
